Corv - first, welcome to the forums - what part of the country are you from?

My '77xlt has the drop in filter in the kidney shaped tank and I have never noticed that kind of problem as long as I keep the cover on tight.  how full do you have your tank and do you check it cold or just after running it?  (thinking an over filled tank or a bad check valve letting oil drain into the crankcase thus making the tank apear to be lower than it really is)

make sure the oil cap gasket is in place, and not torn or worn. replace the filter to make sure the filter is not plugged. make sure the vent and return lines are not switched, and that the engine vent is in place and functioning properly

corv - if yoiu have the "kidney tank" (like J&P # 7400255) then the return from the engine is just under the cap and the overflow is the top one on the back side of the tank.

If your tank is different, maybe noting which one it looks like will help

    Hope this helps
