Replace rear Shocks on a 99 dyna

Ok Guys and Fellow HD enthusiasts < sp? ...

I have replaced Shocks on a number of my Dynas in the past years .. and for some reason or another...  I cannot seem to get the Bolt that goes thru the top mounting hole out...  NOT the bolt that attachs theshock to the frame.. Its the bolt that goes thru the top mounting hole AFTER I have removed the Shock from the bike....  Has ANYONE ever had this issue.?? Is it possible that, that particular bolt is NOT removable ??  or is it press fitted to the point of not being able to be removed ?? I cannot remember having such a hard time removing a simple bolt outta the top of the shock... EVER... !! Maybe i just gotta go to ACE and BUY a coupla different bolts to reattach that shock ???   anybody have this issue ??

Thanks for any and ALL ideas or solutions ... ?????

ps. I am planning a ride to ABQ in the morning and really wanted to put the new BURLY Slammer rear Shocks , before I left ...

Tom - I am not sure if they are the same but I checked my manual for the 95-96 dyna and the top bolt is shown as a stud with a nut on the inside - HD part number 54569-84 - maybe try searching that # in the on-line catelogue to see what years it fits?

    Hope this helps

well... the stud IS the problem... that shouldnt have to come out...   that stud is suppossed to stay in the frame and the shock should just Slide OFF the stud.. PROBLEM is the stud OR the Acorn NUT is stripped.. and it wont screw OFF the stud...  i can get it to move back and forth , but only so far ...  then it just LOCKS up... I am afraid that I am going to have to order a new stud from HD.. IF they still can supply something like that ...   what a bummer... everytime i turn around .. it is something else with this bike ....   oh well   ..

i can get the shock off with the stud still running thru the mounting hole If i can get a new stud , then i can INSTALL the Burly Slammer Shocks onto the bike ... , but, thats gonna have to wait til I get back from my trip ... i just hope that stud doesnt bust while i am riding ...

    thanks for the info

Re: Replace rear Shocks on a 99 dyna

Hey, Ironhead...   I found the bolt/stud that I needed at a Harley in Sante Fe, NM.   Having it shipped to me , as I cant get there before tomorrow ( on my way back home from ABQ, NM.) The store is Closed on Sundays ( Winter Hours- Change ) , but, they had one IN STOCK , the parts guy ( Kenny ) had his hands on it...  the part number is 545547-90A   I actually feel very LUCKY that someone had the part in Stock..  Cant ship it out to me until Tuesday morning , but. what the heck..  least I found it !   So.. once I figure out a way to remove the damn thing from the stock shock, I will have a set of stock shocks to sell and hopefully help pay for the Burly Slammer Shocks...  I never seem to have a problem selling stock parts from Harleys, thats for sure...   someone always has a need for stock stuff....

thanks again for your help... and I am still wondering how you figure getting snow in Hawaii,,,,?

Re: Replace rear Shocks on a 99 dyna

As a follow-up I did a search - on February 12, 2010 there was snow on the ground in all 50 US States (even the Flordia panhandle)

I thought it was more recent than that, but this is what Google says

ok .... well that sure explains alot.... for sure , Ironhead...   now I understand why you said what you said..

now it ALL makes sense ... as I live 3 time zones East of there...

Thanks for all the input..  and i should be rec. that 'stud bolt' in the next few days...and then get those " Burly Slammers " installed..

gonna hit into the 60s in the next few days...  I will be really ready for a ride ....
