R U KIDDING!?!? Bad enough soccer moms talking on cell phones in their Suburbans. Most of us ride to get away from them, far away...

    Re: scala rider device

A Scala Rider device is a Bluetooth communications unit that links wirelessly to a cell phone. It consists of a helmet-mounted receiver and rechargeable battery, a microphone and a speaker. Geesh, I agree with dynamike. I carry a cell phone on the bike like every one else but for Christ's sake, I pull over to a safe place and stop when I use it. Edited by lemck on 6/30/2006 1:39:00 PM

Dynamike, I'm with you on this one. Usually when I ride it's solo and you know why it's solo? Because I like the feeling of me,my sled and the open air. Just listening to the Rumble of the motor as i Tear up the Asphalt beneath the tires RIDE ON

ok, now i know what it is. this is just my personal opinion, but while i also carry one, it is off, and tucked away in the saddlebag where i can't hear it or see it. the only thing i want to hear is the wind and the motor. i guess that's why i've been happily single for three years :)

Researchers have studied this. Plenty! Even with a "hands-free" phone, driver's attention is diverted from the task at hand. I've had a bit of formal training at riding a motorcycle and feel that anything less than 100% attention to riding a motorcycle is courting disaster!

I really enjoy the ride and being able to talk to the wife on the road hands free of course. While we travel down the road we can point out objects of interest or intersection hazards any time. After getting use to being able to carry on a conversation while riding, I’ve found it no more distracting than anything else. I don’t have it set up for phone conversation though. And as I see it, talking on the phone hands free or not (is) too distracting. On the phone, now you are being mentally removed from your task at hand. And that’s piloting your machine safely. At least with bike to bike communication you both are on the same path and are sharing the same concerns of the road ahead of you.  Getting the wife off the back and on her own ride was the first best thing, then still being able to hear her talk to me was the second. I’m sure there are those who don’t share that feeling but that’s the beauty of what we do. We can be different and still enjoy our rides, our way.  The bike to bike intercom was a win win for me.

Hey FMHARR, it's doesn't say anything about how it'll help kill you because it's hard to concentrate on it & the road at the same time !!!   Geeez, we're only guys remember.....multitasking is not in our vocabulary !!! hahaha..................Mick

That’s funny Mick but there’s really nothing to concentrate on. How many times do you talk to yourself when riding down the road, or have something to say about that person that just cut you off?  Same thing except now someone else can share that thought with you. You just put on and forget it. Just like putting on a pair of sun glasses. I don’t know, maybe I’m just a little biased to that system because I use something similar to it in my line of work. I do whole heartedly agree, riding and talking on the phone is asking for trouble. Now you have you mind taken away from where it needs to be.
