    '04 V Star 1100 - Motor "Ticking"

I recently bought my V-Star after not having a bike for the past 8 - 10 years.  I took it in to have the full 4,000 mi. service work done and have the valves checked to see if they needed to be adjusted.  the mechanic said he did adjust the valves and they were very tight.  Now once the bike warms up it is "ticking" very loudly (can definitely hear it above the wind and exhaust).  the shop is trying to tell me that it will tick louder now because the valves are more free, but this seems to be too loud to be "normal".

any thoughts on what if anything I could check myself or what could be going on?

thanks in advance for your input.

     James,

On aluminum engines you can normally hear valve noise but If the ticking is excessively loud the valves are probably misadjusted, Keep in mind that if they adjusted them while the bike was hot it is impossible to get them set right. Did you drop off the bike overnight or for a few hours? normally then need to cool atleast 5 hours before you can touch them. If the noise seems excessive I might try another shop or demand they doublecheck the valve lash.

    Thanks for writing,

Call them up and insist on a recheck, they should not have done it unless left over night. I have the Yamaha 1700 RoadStar, no valve noise just lower end knock on take off or when hot and idling for long periods, all of which are labled as normal.

Try  www.yamahamotorcycleforum.com  Hop on the 1100 section and compare notes.

I have a Suzuki with loud valve action, WHich is normal for it, VL800 correctly set it sounds like an angry industrial sewing machine. Louder exhaust was the fix for it. I would suggest buying a repair manual and talking with the other 1100 riders and doing it yourself. U will not have any questions that someone(you) pulled a short cut on your ride
