New Exhaust for '07 Road King Classic

I have to make a decision and need some input from some of you "unknowns". I know what all my riding buddies think; "do 2 into 1 for better torque and h.p. gains". That sounds all well and good but I am not looking for a higher degree of acceleration at 70 mph. I want a deeper tone, better performance and to maintain the "Classic" look of the bike. I am heavily leaning towards Samson for the system; really like the sound of the "Rolled Thunder" mufflers and Samson head pipes look comparable to V&H and others. This combo comes in at around $100 less than the full Reinhart system, which sounds good but those end caps really look bad. I would appreciate any feedback/advice. My "King" is two years old this month and I just past 30,000 miles so I'm not doing this for show; want it to last and look/sound good.

as you can see from my avatar, i have a set of samsons, duals, both down the right side, i've had em on there for what seems forever, since 1998 i believe, lots and lots of miles on them, i like the sound and they seem to be holding up quite well. not exactly what you're looking at, but i've had no problems with my samson pipes

Appreciate the "no problems". Just curious; any particular reason you run both on the same side vs. one on each? My main purpose is to eliminate the crossover, associated heat and the less than quality stock heat sheilds and pipes.

well, i hated the crossover also, it's a performance killer. this way, i get both pipes the same length, so i get the same back pressure on both cylinders. also, i'm deaf in the left ear, with both on the right side i can hear both cylinders, so i know if it's running right or not. this system is baffled, but they're very free flowing, so i get pretty good all around power out of them, combined with ev-13 cam, S&S E carb, Crane ignition and coil. other wise, it's stock, with a little over 100,000 on the clock

     cornbread,

I've got Rinehart "True Duals" on my 07 FLHRS and I absolutely love the sound. They weren't cheap but I think they are definitely worth it, and If black end caps aren't your thing, Rinehart also makes chrome end caps part# 450-352 but they go for $93 EACH!!!

Thanks for the input; I also found slash cut chrome end caps at $125 ea on the web. If I go Rinehart may just have to deal with the end caps for a while. Samson is still an option too. Going to have the work done this winter at my 35K service so I have time.

Thanks sfranta; good info. I hope to get a lot of miles out of this bike and don't plan on any big engine upgrades other than the exhaust and associated required additions. I have been told by my dealer's service people (who I trust) that the HD Race Tuner is the way to go when I do the exhaust, etc. I have not heard anything bad about it other than the price. Also, by waiting until my 35K service this winter I get 15% off all parts and labor purchased through the dealer. I will most likely buy the pipes/mufflers through JP since the free shipping is more of a break than the 15%. Thanks again and Ride Safe!

I just put RUSH slash down mufflers on my 2008 Heritage and I gotta tell u,,,,WOW these mufflers sound great with a very deep tone.  I got the ones with the 2 inch baffles.  They look great and sound even better.  I know u r looking to get rid of the cross over but I slipped these onto my stock head pipes with their built in cross over and could not be happier.  I was not looking for power gains though, just a good sounding muffler.  RUSH has a great deep rumble on my bike.

Rush was on my list of mufflers with the sound I am looking for; I have spent the last year quizzing owners with different set ups to see how they feel about what they run. I could get by cheaper with just mufflers but the Heritage exhaust is all on the right and I was not aware if there was a heat issue with that set up. For me, going with the true dual headpipes and eliminating the crossover not only reduces the heat but just cleans up the looks of the right side of the bike. Additionally, aftermarket head pipes have much higher quality heat shields that stock. Thanks for the input.
