    12v mechanical regulator troubles

I'm running a 58 pan w/ generator and mechanical reg.(that I think is fried).  I have 3 solid state regulators that I believe are new but none are wired for generator. One has a 4 hole female plug (Bstyle), one is round 2 prong male plug (Fstyle) and the other is 2 prong male plug (A or H style not sure at the moment). Each has a battery lead wire. (I of course would need style G) Since there are no markings on them and you order by the plug style, I wonder if each regulator is preset for the year models specified or are they the same internally with just a different plug. If they are the same internally is it possible to cut the plug and wire to generator? If so since all wires are black how do you know which is field or armature?  Has this been done before or is it totally imposiible? I'm fairly new at this and just hoping I actually listened to and maybe remember what my late husband taught me. Thanks to anyone who might know.

Splutter, the type of regulators have the different type of plugs are for alternators that produce AC. Your generator produces DC. Regulators for AC output cannot work on DC output. A solid state regulator while appearing the same on the outside is considerably different internally. IMHO adding a solid state regulator to a DC generator like you have is the best thing you can do for your charging  systesms reliability.  You  will need a regulator like  PN 381-309 $ 49.99 Black, or PN 380-916 $  59.99 Chrome. The wire colors will be tan, green and red. Green to Field, Tan to Armature, Red to Battery.
