converting to wide glide front end on 82 FXR

Okay, I have been doing a lot of research on converting to a wide glide front end on my FXR with mixed results.

So now I ask you, the JPCycle forum, who are the S#%T by the way, what your thoughts are on this.

I have read that a WG front end will take away from the handling on the FXR and I have read that the WG front will help to stabilize it? I want both form and function, but mostly function out of what I do end up putting on it. I already have the 41MM fork tubes, so now, "To Wide Glide or Not to Wide Glide" that is the question. And of course it might help if I stop riding it like a supercross dirtbike. Stick out tongue

As always thanks for all of the help that I have received over the years from ALL of you at JP.

i think the biggest thing will be converting a 41mm tree to the fxr frame. at the least, you'll have to fabricate fork stops. there is nothing made for bolt on for 1982 model that i know of. i think the tree stem length is the same, but i cannot verify that. the bearings are standard 1 inch, so that shouldn't be a problem. 41mm tubes are stronger, and allows the use of a bigger front tire, which i think handle better than the skinny tire, but that's just me.

In my opinion, the FXR chassis as it comes from the factory is the best handleing chassis Big Twin ever produced. Once again, In my opinion, adding a wide glide will detract from the handling. A wide glide is NOT more stable than a narrow glide. They just look cooler.

    Rider,

I have a wide glide on my 88 FXR. Two of my friends have stock FXR's. They handle much better than mine. Also I had to put a fork brace on mine to tighten it up. You'll probably have to modify the fork stops. With as much as I wanted to file off the lower tree to be safe, it still doesn't have the turning radius of the stock front ends.
