    clutch cable travel length

Can anyone tell me the difference in the travel length between a "H" and "J". according to the instructions that came with the clutch cable I just bought a "J" length travel is for a 2001-2002 FXDWG and a "H" is for a 1996 up softtail. I have broken 2 replacement cables that the stealership installed each one only lasting about 1 month. I am using this on a 2001 AIH Ranger with a Jims 6 spd trans. GRRRRRR.

    Re: clutch cable travel length

I spoke to Barnett about this and they are a mytified as I am. The handle bar controls and the clutches are exactly the same on both of those models so there should be no difference in the cables. The exposed wire length  on 87-2006 5 speed applications is 2 3/4". The 06-09 Dyna and 07-09 Softail has a different exposed wire length  at 3".  Sorry, I can't help here.

As far as tearing up cables, Make sure you are not putting a bind on the cable from an improperly adjusted clutch. The major cause of new cable failure is the clutch ball and ramp not being fully retracted when the new cable is adjusted. The balls get to the top of the travel and the stress goes right into the cable. Also make sure the routing doesn't include any sharp bends, as that could also cause a stress area and potentially break the cable as well.............

    Re: clutch cable travel length

I really appreciate your feed back. When I took it apart myself I found that the stealedship did not put a little plastic insert back into the clutch lever and the cable eye which was letting the cable bind in the handle. I got a piece of brass stock and made a bushing for the eye and pivot bolt and we'll see how long it will work. It's amazing how they let some guys work at the dealship. No more attention to detail.
