    Big sucker

I'm thinking about buying a big sucker air cleaner. Will I have to re-jet my carb? It's a Stock CV on a 99 TC88.

The TC's are super Lean from MoCo, (EPA & all) If it were me, I would certainly re-jet. You're allowing it to inhale much better, so your AFR is gonna be leaner yet.. You haven't mentioned any better exhaling pipes ??

Stock jetting should be about 45/190,  I'd bump the slow jet to a 48 & get the cap off the mix screw, richen that a bit..Then your jet needle (leanest part) should be shimmed about .030-.050 to start, or the 1988XL needle.. This will also help cool down your motor.. The stock main jet should be fat enough... IMO..

    Re: Big sucker

    EzDan,

I have a 2002 FXDL with a TC-88 engine. I installed an Arlen Ness Big Sucker 1 air filter in July just before leaving WA State for Sturgis. My bike got anywhere from 46-48 mpg, and ran like a charm. I didn't have to rejet my carb or make any other changes after installing the Big Sucker. I also run Cycle Shack mufflers. Maybe you can run it a while and see if you really need to rejet. I'm not an expert Harley mechanic, I'm just letting you know how my bike has ran since the installation of the new filter.

    Ride safe,

     Smitty-

And now what is your AFR (Air Fuel Ratio) ??? 14.8:1 or higher ??

Would you agree it is now LEANER running than with the oem breather & oem pipes ??

I would think your spark plugs 'read'  white..

To optimize the mods & improve the AFR, re-jetting should be done..And done correctly bike will run better yet & a bit cooler as well..

    Re: Big sucker

With the mileage I'm getting and the way the bike runs, I really don't agree with your expert evaluation. And no my plugs are not white, the bike was serviced by my local dealer just before I left for Sturgis and the technician said the bike was in excellent shape. My plugs are normal with no white or sooty deposits. Just my ,02 worth !!!

If I were you, I would pop for one of the CV upgrade kits that make your CV have lots more performance.

It requires that you drill your air bleed but, they even give you the drill bit.

Should work nice with your Big Sucker.

    Re: Big sucker

Does Harley or J&P sell the kit, and do I have to have the carb serial number and model number to order ?

Thanks to all of you for the great advice.
