    95 Road King clutch Adj.

Wow, I guess I havnt been here in a wile. New look, sweet.

Ok, on to my question,  I have a 95 Road King classic and I am having problems with my clutch adjustment.  First off I noticed that the clutch was releasing as soon as I let the handle off the handle bar, (Starting off riding), So I adjusted the clutch a per the "book" and it seemed to be doing fine but then it was not releasing untill it (the clutch handle) was almost  all the way out. Then I was riding and I down shifted to 4th gear and got on the throttle and it slipped like hell. Never did it again. So I took it to the local bike shop and he adjusted it by the book again, same as I did before. Now it seems to be out of adjustment again. It is getting hard to pull the clutch handle and it wont come out of 1st gear to nuetral untill I shut the bike off.  It shifts ok from 1st to second while riding but when I stop and go to put it in nuetral it wont go into nuetral untill I shut it off. When I shut it the bike off in gear it feels like it is still pulling foward till the engine stops runing.

      Any help would be appreciated.

Ok, if the clutch adjustment seems to be going away regularly after an adjustment, the wafer throw out bearing is likely to be failing. This is common if the correct amount of free play is not set up. This wafer bearing is designed to not have any tension on it with the clutch lever released. It is not a tough part (about the size and thickness of a Dime) and is prone to failure if not adjusted correctly.

Had the same thing go on in my '96 FLSTC. Had to replace the clutches cause of a smooth spring plate, held together by brass rivets, came apart and tore up clutches and a groove in the clutch housing. Since then the cluth is acting perfectly...

Edited because of a brain fart...

it's at the end of the rod that goes straight through the clutch assy. when you adjust the clutch with the set screw that's the rod with the throw out wafer attached to its end.

Under the cover the clutch cable goes into. (oposite side of the bike from the clutch pushrod adjusting screw)

Thanks for the help. I will see what is going on inside that cover and hopefully everything is ok.  I'll let you know what I find, Thanks.
