    Primary gasket kit

I will be removing my primary cover, and will need to replace the gasket, and I might as well replace about everything else that seals on that side. I see a couple of gasket kits for my 83 XLX. Anyone better than the other? I know these bikes had a tendency to leak, so will either work better to stay sealed? Right now I am looking at 601-005

The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything, and let the problem solve itself?

The big key is prep - on my '77 I block sand both mating surfaces then use a very very thin coat of gasket maker on both surfaces.  Additionally, I have added an O-ring to the footpeg shaft (between the case and the footpeg mount and an O-ring to the stud that the primary cahin adjuster rides on (O-ring on the outside between the case and the nut).  I have used both steel and synthetic gaskets - my preference is steel (you can always add another thin layer of gasket maker and put it back on in a pinch)

    hope this helps

Is there any one point on these that tends to leak more than others?

Bottom more than the top  Whisper

anywhere near one of the dowel points - little harder to get cleaned - maybe the back more than the front (clutch mechanism pushing against the cover).

and as I said, on my cover there were two locations where there were shafts coming through that didn't have any seal (stud for primary adjuster and stud for foot peg mount) - I put Orings on them - seems to work pretty good.

This project is going to heck in a hurry. Putting the cover back on, and find one of the bolts just keeps turning. went in fine. Came off fine. Nothing to indicate anything was wrong. Now I get to fix that. Also, my foot peg needs to be replaced. It appears there is a pin on it to help keep it from moving. That pin is gone. So, does J&P sell the foot peg for the left side of an 83 XLX?

    Re: Primary gasket kit

Is this one of the long bolts or short bolts (my '77 has two short bolts at the top)?  You might try the bolt withot the cover in place - see if there is 1/2 inch of thread yiou could use with a longer bolt

    otherwise, $hit!

for my spare set of peg mounts, I was lookin' at using a drill bit - cut it off on the solid section (base), insert it with some locktite bearing goop

    hope this helps

Honestly, I do not remember if it was long or short. I took them out, placed them in order, and returned them the same way. I was thinking of either longer or shorter to set it to torque down. First thing tho is for me to break out the tap and die set to make sure all the threads are good.

    Re: Primary gasket kit

I have a question about the parts in 601-005. Are there parts in this kit that are not for use on my 83 XLX? There is a total of 9 pieces, and some are not in the picture. There is the obvious [1]primary gasket, and [2][3] O-rings for the plugs. There is also [4] the seal for the shifter.

Parts I could not find a match to would be another seal with metal in it, a metal bracket/spacer, a smaller O-ring. There are a couple of other items which I need to take pictures of. I wondered if a couple of the parts (metal spacer/bracket and the seal would be for the clutch cable assembly inside the primary, but I did not want to take that apart. There was no documentation, and my manual did not show me anything that looking like these parts. This leads to the question, are there parts in there not meant for my bike? I will try to get pictures of the rogue parts tonight and post them online.
