I am workiing on my 79 FLH Shovel I inherited from my brother and he punched the motor out but just one step above stock bore. I keep killing solenoids somehow and I was wonodering if this had anything to do with it as it does struggle to turn the motor over at times like its compression is thorugh the roof. I had the compression checked and they said it still is like a new motor but I am unsure whatis doing this to solenoids? Is it a known problem with the older shovels electric starters? Any trick of the trade anyone has would be helpful
Thanks
War,
Check the timing. Too far advanced will cause the engine to fire too soon, and the starter to labor.

PS: If your 79 has been changed over to points, check that the advance mechanism isn't stuck in the advanced position. They have to be lubed periodically.
FX, the advanced timing thing will kill bendix drives, not solinoids. War fighter, have you ever taken one of the ones you have killed apart to see what is up? What brand are you replaceing the solinoid with (Personally I hate the Accel ones)?
I would think that if he has to hold the starter button in for a long period, it is burning the contacts in the sol. before it's time.
