    06 SPORTY 1200C-- High Performance Ing. ?

My Bike ( O6 SPORTY 1200C Last year before H.D. changed to F.I.) is Running Well but I would like more speed (Pass those Spotster Haters ) I payed my Harley Tax & just looking what to do next? is it worth it to install a H.P. Ignition on it? I know I would move the Rev-limter up to 6000 RPM maybe a little more

Or should I save money up to install some H.P. Cams???

P.S. Can you smoke the rear wheels on a 1200 ? is it by just holding on to the front brake???

    THANKS FOR THE HELP---

P.S.---Or I Just might not change anything at all & enjoy the riding

    THANKS

    Scott

Re: 06 SPORTY 1200C-- High Performance Ing. ?

I like sportys just fine the way they are. they sound great with good pipes. may very well be the best sounding of all the harleys.  i have a friend that rides a 2004 sprtster roadster. it has v&h straightshots and has been jetted.  those are the only mods.  he doesnt have any trouble sounding off and passing much of anyhing else on the road when he wants too.  He put a HD sundowner saddle on it for long ride comfort and it fits and suits him very well.  we take a 300 to 400 mile all day saturday ride about once a month or so depending on our schedules and his sporty doesnt have any trouble comfortably hauling him and whatever load he carries plus he always beats the rest of us out on miles per gallon although with the smaller tank than the rest of us we have to stop for fuel more often.  thats ok though cause fuel stops often lead to yet another adventure along the ride.  I've seen some of the guys who ride sportys and attend the local bike nite resturant here in my town smoke the tire quite easily after they got all loosened up drinking and decided to show off a bit.

I personally dont know any sportster haters that are already hd riders, its usually the wanna be hd riders that i hear hating sportys most often.  I say if you want to ride a HD, then ride a HD no matter of the model you choose.  if you want to ride metric, then ride metric and be happy with it too!  another one of my best riding buddies rides a VTX honda.  He likes it and we dont bash him about it.  He also likes harleys just fine and is probably fixing to get one because he has decided that his bike is just not quite comfortable enough for some of the relatively long rides that we go on.

If your sporty was my ride, I would only make enough mods to get it sounding good and ride and enjoy it for a long time.  I out grew the need to smoke a tire many years ago but I do enjoy watching someone burn one down from time to time.

This is just my opion though and my own riding taste have changed over the years.  I have 32 years of riding road bikes under my belt now plus the years of riding dirt bikes when I was a kid.  when I first started riding the streets, I hot rodded every bike I had and drag raced a lot and burned up a lot of tires.  I had a lot of fun gettin to where i am now in my motorcycle riding career.  nowdays, i like to cruise and take in all the sights and smells and maintain my bike for longivity and practical function and good looks.  its fun to twist the throttle and hear the HD roar and feel the power once in a while but its even more fun for me to have a dependable good looking HD that i can take to work or on a long ride and be comfortably in the wind.

good luck and have fun with your decisions about how u want  your bike.

    Scott

Are you looking for top end speed or Haul-a$$ torque?

If you are looking for top end speed and if it will currently haull to the rev limiter (in top gear) you could do a sprocket change (bigger front and / or smaller rear).

When workin' on your ride the first tool out of the box should be the manual

     Scott,

I also own an 06 1200c, is it worth it to upgrade the ignition? well it is if your going to do a few other mods, if not, then no.

my first combo with my sporty was the following,

modified SE pipes (basically the gronk mod from the xlforum)

    SE aircleaner

    andrews n-4 cams

    mikuni hsr42 carb

and a daytona twin tec tc88a ignition module ( which is fully computer programable)

output on the dyno was  82hp and 80ft lbs, and it ran very well

be advised however when you go ignition module shopping, they changed the speedo pickup gear on the 06 and later, if you buy an 04-06 module your speedo will be off by 17% ..........it has to be for an 06..........

a much simpler thing to do would be to just buy and install an 883 front sprocket for the belt, you will gain acceleration at the expense of some top end

Thanks for all the input -- I am just going to ride my Sporty like it is.

A much bigger problem down the road is the state of California
    ( which has no money)
Tried to start Smog Testing for all Bikes from 2000 to new --
Thankfully that was shot down this time but I think the time will come
which will make it a bear switching the parts back to past the smog test every other year.
But it has not happened yet
    Thanks

    THANKS

Re: 06 SPORTY 1200C-- High Performance Ing. ?

I installed a screamin' eagle ignition box on my '06.  This ignition box is specifically for the '06, and the p/n is 32471-06. This is a plug and play box, with NO password learn procedure required. It took me less than 5 minutes to make the swap, fire the bike up, and ride away. No more detonation, and the speedometer reads correctly. If you do a Google search with just the part number, there will be a few dealerships from around the country who still have this ignition in stock. It is $119.95+ shipping/handling. Very happy with the results.  This box retards the timing at full throttle to eliminate detonation, and raises the rev limit to 7000rpm.
Here are the mods that I did to my 06, and it rocked.  These are simple mods, only requires about 2-3hours to do:
    1. Vance & Hines straight shot slip-ons
    2. Carb jetting.  Go to this website, order their jet kit, it is the ONLY kit to use, and it is cheap.  DO NOT let anyone tell you otherwise.  http://www.harley-performance.com/stage-1-carb-kit.html
    3. Screamin Eagle High Flow aircleaner assembly.
    4. Screamin Eagle Ignition Box, p/n 32471-06, as listed above.  I ordered my box from Team Latus Harley in Oregon, via the internet, or you can call them.
I have recently traded out the Sportster for a 2009 Street Bob, but that 1200 was a blast to ride after these mods were done.  No more detonation, sounded good, and hauled the mail.
