Progressive spring package for '69 shovel

My fork tubes are 2 inches over on my '69 shovel.  Do I need a spacer 2 inches longer than the 3.5" specified in the directions?  The current front ends has 2 inch spacers to account for the 2 inch longer tubes.  Thanks.

    Gary,

Yes, you don't want two spacers in there. If the spring kit is for a stock set-up, use 5 1/2" spacers. Use the grey PVC pipe, it's thicker. Sand it down good and clean, so no PVC crumbs get in the tubes....................

    Gary,

Are you extending the fork tubes on the bike or just replacing the springs with a Progressive Spring kit?

Re: Progressive spring package for '69 shovel

I installed 2" over tubes about 30 years ago with a 2" spacer--the springs are stock.   Since I put a disc brake set-up on it last year, I thought I would replace the 40 year original springs with new Progressive springs.  Since the new brake works so well, I am experiencing front end dive that I never had before with the mechanical drum--just wanting to upgrade.

I really appreciate all your help--ironically, I am reading the J&P book sent in my last order.  Real class organization!

     Gary,

What is the part # of the springs that you purchased? Are they calling for a 3.5" spacer for stock length fork tubes?

    Phyxsius,

This set of springs is for a stock front end.  The instructions say to cut a 3.5 inch spacer, so I thought that with a 2 inch over front end, I would need a 5.5 inch spacer...I do not know for certain.  Also, what about the amount of fork oil I will need.  The shop manual indicates 6.5 oz. or 7 oz. if dry.  Reading the instructions from PROGRESSIVE SPRINGS, I am not sure, since they say their springs will displace more fork oil.  To answer another of your questions, the Fork Springs part # is 11-1131.  The J&P stock # is 230-456.  Thanks for your thoughts.

I did the exact thing on my 69 flh about 5 years ago. I used 5.75 in. spacers ,added .25 inch for good measure ( threw away plastic and cut them from stainless tube ) Used stock amount of fork oil. You could try using heavier weight oil to correct dive. I used s.a.e.20. Had no problems. ROB

Are you saying the ride quality is the same?  I was hoping the progressive springs would be better than the stock springs.  Thanks.
