1984 FXR Not Starting, Just a click

I had my bike sitting up for about a year and a half, and just recently did a tune up put in a new oil pump and change the fluids. The bike was turning over previously to sitting up, and now all i get is a single click noise(from the area of the starter i believe) when i hit the switch. The starter was change previously to sitting up, in the process of the tune up i had the starter solenoid, relay, and the coil change. I need help pinpointing what could be the problem.

    Thanks In Advance

Sounds like the relay is just clicking.   I'd start with the battery - a low voltage can cause this.  I'd start with just charging up the battery and see if that fixes it.  Next, I'd double check that the solenoid was actually changed.  If not and the old one is still there, the contacts could be burned.  Those aren't hard to clean.  (makes me wonder why they'd change those).  There's always a bad connection at the button - but I'm betting on the low battery charge.  If it is in the starter button, a simple fix is to buy the solenoid starter button - mounts on the backside of the solenoid, and makes a positive manual connection - bypasses the button.  I've got them on all my bikes as a backup measure - J&P sells them.

Thanks, well my battery is fully charged, but I'll make the starter button my starting point. I also tried tapping my starter with a rubber mallet and got it to turn over a couple times before it went back to the single click noise when you hit the switch. Don't know if that helps with helping me : )

My suggestion is to look thru the wiring for any loose connections, but I'm still thinking your solenoid is the problem - sounds like the contacts are burned.  My suggestion is to continue to wring out the wiring, but buy that button that replaces the cover on the end of the solenoid.  At least then, while you track down the problem, you can ride with reliable starts.  When you install the new cover, you can remove the plunger and check out the contacts.  If they are burned, you can use a file on them.  It's way hard to get to the inside contacts, but sometimes just doing the ones on the plunger is good enough.  If it starts with the regular button after that, you've narrowed it down, if not, you've still got your new button, which I bet will definitely start the bike.

Have you preformed a load test on the battery? Seeing a full voltage charge with a voltmeter does not always support the battery being good. You may just be seeing a surface charge and that battery actually failing under load.

Well I tried the starter button, If i installed it right : ), it didnt help. I connect the starter button to the solenoid one wire to each of the main post and when i pushed the button I got nothing, not even the click. So that clicking noise which is from the starter relay is still clicking. The starter isn't turning over whatsoever and the clicking only happens when I hit the engine start button.......

    Xea

(tongue in cheek) - are you becoming one of those old farts that keeps repeating yourself?  Cool

bryanlb - "back yard" load test - connect your volt meter accross the battery, try your horn (note voltage drop)

trun your high beam on for 1 minute, try your horm (note voltage drop and drop in horn volume)

big voltage drop or big horn volume drop or a voltage drop under 12.1 or 12.2 V, take the battery in for a proper load test

    hope this helps

When workin' on your ride the first tool out of the box should be the manual

Remove the negative battery cables, clean the terminals, lugs, posts and cable ends.  A year and a half is plenty of time for corrosion to ruin the connections.

The load test would be the first thing I'd try too..(an easier load test)  take the battery to an auto parts store, most if not all stores can do  the load test on it.
