    Stripped shift lever

Well, its finally happened...my shift lever has stripped on the pawl shaft.  I know I have to take the outer and inner primary off but does anyone have any tips before tackling what looks like is gonna be my winter project?  The splines on the shaft look ok so I'm hoping I just have to change the lever.

    Thanks

I'm not sure if it's called the lever or the arm but it's the one that ties to the tranny shaft.

I would not tackle this without a service manual available. Get real familer with the steps to disassemble the inner and outer from your service manual and do not try to rush things. The clutch will need to be disassembled and a puller required to take the clutch hub off the tranny main shaft.

This is a fairly common problem, and in the past after replacing the shift arm, I have drilled through the arm and shaft and added a roll pin to keep it from happening again.

This might seem obvious, but be sure that the set screw is cranked down good and tight.  I thought I had stripped the splines in the lever one time and discovered that the set screw was very loose.  The screw was hard to turn even when backed out a few turns. Seemed like it was tight, but it was not.

Might be possible to remove the pawl by only taking off the tranny top cover - can't remember for sure.  If you do need to pull the primary, get one of those extended transmission nut sockets.

There is another fix option. Buy a new allen screw and install, Once you have the screw tight. use an allen socket with an extension. with the allen socket/extension in place smack the end of the extension real good, a coule of times. retighten the allen screw and you should be good to go. Been there, done that!

I know this is a little off the request, but it reminded me of when this happened to my 1974 yamaha 360 DT. In those days the Fix was a Welder. I know it's very Crude, and Quick fix.

While you have the trans apart replace the springs on the shifter paw.  If those go bad, you have to pull the entire thing apart again.  Cheap springs, cost more for gaskets and fluid to fix.
