    Bike Starts then Quits

I have a friend with a 2000 Ultra Classic, 60,000 miles, no modifications.  The bike still has the original battery.

It starts fine, runs for less than a minute and quits jut as though someone hit the kill switch.  It had a code that the crank positioning sensor was bad, so he changed that.  The code is gone now but the bike still quits after running less than a minute.

    What should be checked next?

Is he doing anything to he motorcycle when it quits? Sitting on the bike? Just starting the bike moving anything that could cause a poor or loose connection?

Also when you mean quit. Can he start the motorcycle right back up again after it shuts down?

'00 Ultra classic - 60,000 miles - that is FI, isn't it?  How full is the gas tank?  If it is down on fule (1/3 or less) try filling the tank and giving it another try (I am thinking about the problem others have had with a cracked fuel line inside the tank)

When workin' on your ride the first tool out of the box should be the manual

    The bike is fuel injected.

He says that after it stalls, it will not restart until he shuts the ignition off, then turns it back on.

Thanks for the help.  All it took was disconnecting the bank angle sensor and the bike runs.  A new sensor is on order at the local dealer.

If somebody 20 years ago told me there would be sensors and pollution control on bikes i would have said their crazy. Whats it like poppin a Gremlin built imported sensor on the interstate sunday nite at 9:30, 75 miles from home. Come on, it is a two cylinder motor. I ride to relieve stress. I guess its all good when everything's new and on warrenty, and I never had fuel injection but is seems to work well. I am happy with, it got cold so turn a screw 1/4 turn and only worrying about flats. Is remote start out there or is it coming up?  Keep it simple Willy.

Ya know Rob,  I ride, and love,  my 78 Lowrider shovel all over the place, it does an excellant job.

But when I wanna go cruising.. (interstate) I get out the FLHTC,  Got the Fairing, got the tunes,  got the six speed,

and then its time to cover some ground.  I'm not saying that newer is better, or that older is worse,

but park your butt on a New or newer bike for 5,000 miles and you will see what I mean.

Harley pretty much has done it right !  The bikes handle nice, perform great from stock, they start every time,

and you can ride without too much worry.

    Just my two cents.

I hear you canyonman, Im not talking about new vs. old. I would like to have a rubber mounted engine and disc brakes. Im talking about electronics that can leave you stranded because you cant fix them on the road. look at the begining of this post, pj02ultra couldnt keep his bike running because of a bank sensor. I dont know what it is or what it does. luckily he could unplug it and the bike ran. Im all for a lot of the innovations H.D. has come up with over the years. Do you really think the new bikes need pollution control ? There are a lot of things that are designed so you cant work on them yourself easily. A lot of H.D.'s revenue is from the service dept. Take care and keep those sensors happy.

Back in the day, performance meant getting the optimum out of an engine. This meant HP, Torq and clean burn. Clean burn was accomplished by not having any unspent fuel in the exhaust. Over the years I have had a lot of bikes, performance cars and built rods. some of my favorites were tempermental in tuning. The fuelie chevies were the most tempermental of all. Those who loved them fiddled with them at least on a weekly basis. I could make night time runs across the Mohave on my way to LA for Christmas from the midwest, running 80+ MPH and get 21 MPG in my 62 FI vette. tweeked and tuned to have the plugs burn light grey. Mecahnical fuel injection with mechanical dual point distributer. Long before the days of computers and high intensity spark ignition systems.

Considering the time compared to today, that was respectable fuel economy with an engine that used an old ignition system with a much lower spark capacity and no computer to control fuel metering. The new cars with all the advancements made in fuel and spark control aren't really all that much better in mileage. Damn sure don't give you the performance in the HP and Torq areas. when I speak of new cars, I am referring to something comfortable to drive as in a midsize and not some beer can on wheels or roller skate. Most optimally get 30 MPG on avg.

Really, have we come that far? All we have done, is make it more complicated.
