is electric start a option on a 73 sportster, or do they all have it?

Yes.~they all have it..... The manual only shows one model that year, and it's an XLCH. meaning that its a "high performance XL (w/ kicker)" so the kick start is the actual add on by the factory, if I'm not mistaken..? Edited by Telson on 9/28/2007 3:40:29 AM

All XLCH models are kick-start only. All XLH models are electric-start, and some had kickers........

hmmm?,... well my manual has only the xlch for 73' as bikes listed within the manual,..71'-78' but wiring diagrams for xl 73'~74' and xlch 73'~74 not sure why they would set it up like that? My bad,... I'll make sure to tripple check before putting my foot in my mouth again..

Maybe somethings askew but my 1972 sportster 1000 is a XLCH with kick and electric. Engine block number 4A. Everthing is still stock and I doesn't appear the engine been change out, title reads 4A also. I believe 72 was the last year of Harley ownership before AMF and they were piece together from lots of old stock from at least 64 and up on my bike

from what i read at this site electric start is listed as a option in 67' but makes no mention of it in the following years. http://www.sportster.org/history

    Re: 73 sportster electric start

In '73, Sportsters left the factory as either an XLH with electric start only, or an XLCH with kickstart only. Any Sportster of that year that has both kick and electric had one of them added-on.

I don't know if there's a complete "conversion kit" that will include everything you need, but e-start can be added.
