    Rear Hub set-up questions

I set-up my  American Wire Wheel rear hub by the manual, with the exception of the stepped spacer, which I eliminated. I machined the spacer tube and ended up with .003 end play. The spacer tube diameter contacts the small side of the cone with no interferance to either the cage or rollers. I really see no problem with this arrangement, but Harley must have had some reason for this stepped spacer, which seems to me redundant. Thought it best to get some opinions.

as far as i know, the step is just to help keep the grease in the general vicinity of the bearing. without the step, the grease can easily flow into the center of the wheel, out of the bearing. i always throw some extra grease into the center of the hub to fill the space and help keep grease in the bearing where it belongs. put a film of grease on the axle also, to prevent it from corroding itself to the inner race. makes it easier to dissassemble the next time
