    5000 mile service

got a 2006 FXD and want to do the 5000 mile service, I would like to use Valvoline 20-50w racing oil in the crankcase with some lucas oil treatment.  is this OK?  i know in the service manual it says to use an oil compatible with diesel engines or harley oil only.  I have been using valvoline for years so i get quality with good price.  but will go with what is reccomended.

I wouldn't recommend it.  You don't have to use "Harley" oil but you should use a V twin formulated motorcycle oil.  If I remember correctly, my book says to use a "Diesel Compatible" in an emergency, i.e., you're in a pinch on the road.   You need to remember that your HD is not just air cooled, but oil cooled. The correct weight V Twin motorcycle oil is formulated to not just lubricate, but cool your motor.

Personally I have used Valvoline racing oil for years with no problems. However, I change oil every 2500 miles. The racing oil has less zinc that is essental for use in an air cooled motor. That's why HD specifies a diesel compatable oil. They are manufactured with more zinc than conventional oils. Ask about oil around here and you will get 1000 opinions.....

Speaking of "oil cooled", I was told full synthetic doesn't pull heat from the motor as well as conventional oil, is this true?

Some one needs to put the harley manual down!!!!!!    Please!!!!

Use what ever motor oil you want.  As long as the weight is correct for the outside temps. you ride in.   Try typing in oil in the forum search. You'll find about a few million forums on oil and weights and who uses what.  I have ran Kendall in all my bikes.

Look out here comes another oil thred!!!!!!!!!!

Hey man just to let you know,  that you can use any oil in your bike you want.  Harley cann't tell you what oil to run.  Your warranty will be good no matter what oil you run.  As long as you changed it , when the milage comes up due.

Castrol 20W50 for 30 years now with no problem...

I guess you could use Porsche oil or Volkswagen oil or Subaru oil since they are also all air-cooled engines. I've never been able to find it though.
