    pulling a clutch hub

I've had my clutch hub off twice since last year (actually replaced the hub bearing last time) but I need to get the hub off again for a motor rebuild (gotta pull the inner primary) and I'm having a dog of a time separating the hub from the shaft!

I have a fear of pulling the basket apart with the puller and I have had more pressure than I care to placed on the hub.

I've tried heat and penetrating oil and some tapping with a metal beaner on the puller to get some friction going on in there.

    I'm at a loss.

    it's a 86 flhtc

no I don't remember if I put any antisize in there last time I might a just wiped off the shaft and slid the hub on. dunno.

    help!

What kind of puller are you useing? The stock type puller, PN 6100040 $ 29.99, pulls against the studs of the clutch basket. If it seems like it is coming off hard, put the puller under a little tension, and a sharp rap with a hammer on the pullers center bolt will usually break things free.

    Re: pulling a clutch hub

I'm using a two arm claw puller and the spring adjusting plate of the clutch assembly.

I kow it's not zakly cosher but it has worked for me in the past (receint past) and it's only been a couple months since I had it off.

I think I put the dang thing on dry last time and there is talk that the key might be sheered a bit making it like a weld on the shaft.

I don't know but I think I'm gonna try to get a deferent puller and use some CO-2 on the shaft to try and schrink it a tad.  heat and beatin on it hasn't done me any good thus far.

    Re: pulling a clutch hub

ok so I pulled the mill out the back door.  well not really but I couldn't get the clutch hub off so I cheated and pulled the motor our from under the compensating nut.  gonna need to get that hub off to put everything back together but...

here's the delemma,  I ordered that puller mentioned above #6100040 and it got here last night.

went out to make magic and it ain't even a poof!

how do I get this puller to work?  do I have to go out and buy longer stud bolts?

I think I'm starting to forget more than I know here to begin with so I need a lil hand.

    thanx all.

    winter is tickin by.

On your clutch there are 4 bolts that hold the diaphram spring in place. There are 4 corisponding holes that will line up on the puller. If your stock bolts are too short (and they may be) get 4 longer 1/4-20 bolts to run throught the puller. Once thay are in place, start turning the center puller screw.

    Re: pulling a clutch hub

Bolts are short but that's not really the issue with this puller.  none of the holes line up with the 4 bolt holes.

I just got back from the NAPA for the longer bolts but I have not been able to get anything to line up nuts on.

using the diaphram plate as a template, sitting here at the box I still can't get a line up.

real close but nothing dead on.

    Re: pulling a clutch hub

so I guess some slop in the bolt patern isn't too much of an issue here what?

I mean I got reach between the plate and the shaft and the bolts will bend ever so slightly but it shouldn't geek things up should it?

I've always had tools (in the service) that fit dead nutz on so I'm kinda leary of the lil slop here.

I'm ready to giver a go tho

     Well Now!

I am sorry to have Doubted you on the puller Xea.  with all the banging and cussin and heat treating and on and on with this hub, it popped off with hardly a turn.  I am however plexed over the hole alinment but being I had about 2 inches to make it work I guess all is well.

the hub key is tweeked a mite like it was on the way to shear off.so I guess I'll start lookin for a new one what?

    thanx again dude,

I'll be hollern your way again in a few days as I continue to tear down the bike.
