    Harley Davidson tank badge

I have an all black FLHX 2006. I love the way the paint responds to a good cleaning, wax, and polishing. I do have a problem with the tank bage colecting what ever polish or wax I use in the the little small areas. Of course I can spend time using a Q-tip to clean this up but, after all it's not a show bike. I'd really like to remove these badges from the tank and leave it smooth. Does any know how this is done with out doing a lob on the paint?

    Thanks for your reply

Those decals are under the clear coat. You could sand them off and reclear, but you take the chance of taking the color off.

Thank you sir for that suggestion. I think maybe I didn’t do such a good job of describing what I have. It’s an 2006 Street Glide, and it’s not a decal but a stick on badge. I think I was told once that by using a hair dryer or a heat gun, they could be removed by melting the glue. Has anyone tried this?

    Thanks for your reply

I appoligize, I did not understand what you have. The hair dryer/heat gun thing should do exactly what you are trying to do.

Try the hair dryer first - it put out a lot less heat.  somethnig you should be concerned about is color fading on the tank - what comes out under the "decal" may not be quite the same color.

Thanks guys. I’ll try the hair dryer first. A ghost emblem from the fading paint won’t be a problem. May be a little unique

You can also use Dental Floss to take it off!

Lighter fluid to remove any remaining adhesive. It won't attack the paint. If that doesn't work, try some denatured alcohol, but test first on a hidden area.

I pulled the reflectors of the rear fender on my bike with my fingers and cleaned up the sticky stuff left behind with a product called "goo gone".

You can't tell they were ever there.

I use goo be gone quite a bit. It works really well and is safe on most finishes.

However I used it recently on the label on the front edge of an LCD flatscreen I had just bought and it attacked the plastic.

moral to the story, test the surface no matter what you use.

All suggestions are greatly appreciated. Now I’m sure I can tackle this little project with a lot more confidence.

I use fishing line working back -n- forth working my way under the emblems.. (like dental flossing)..........

They come off pretty easy, usually a little residual clean-up & good to go..

    my .2 cents

Union Rubber has a product called Bestine that does a good job of taking off that sticky crap. Just don't sniff it too long..it's kinda toxic.

http://papercement.com/bestine.html  I usually can find it at an Art supply store..it's made for desolving glue and doesn't leave any residue...works real well on plastics too.
