i am always coming accross sportsters that have been converted to rigid hardtail.. looking at the frame of the bike i don't see much difference between the sportster frame and fxd frame.. but i have never seen a conversion kit for an fxd (i have an 08)..  does anyone know if there is such an animal out there? and if not, would you know why it would not work? thanks

The Sportster engine has a engine/transmission that is unit construction (all in one case). The FXD is 3 different cases (engine, transmission and primary) bolted together. The Sporty and FXD have completely different mounting points. The FXD is rubber mounted, Sporty's untill 2003 are rigid mount.  You can get a hardtail frame that you can use your motor in (with special mounts), but your tranny and pimary would need to be changed to a softail version of each to work with it.

Or you could try your local Indy bike builder and see if he could build you a bolt on section just for your bike (heck, if he builds a jig he may even have a product to sell to others)
