Have a 2003
FLHRCI with 17K miles.
My shifter just 'failed' on the way home from work last night.
The ball joint / cuff linkage at the front end of the shift
linkage broke. Looking at the wear pattern and the
installed arrangement; it is clear that since the shift rod is not
exactly parallel to the centerline of the bike, this linkage is prone to frequent failure.
Pulled over, tie-wrapped and rode safely and easily to stealership. Once there I found out that of course stock is no longer available; nor would I really want one since learning how it's designed.
And yep, prices are outrageous to replace with a custom linkage rod (Road King engraved on rod).
What's the normal 'bike-life' of the shifter Linkage? Anywhere from 15K
to 20K miles? Or does it depend on how hard you ride the bike? Meaning how hard
you shift?
