    Broken Shifter Linkage Rod

    Have a 2003 FLHRCI with 17K miles.

My shifter just 'failed' on the way home from work last night. The ball joint / cuff linkage at the front end of the shift linkage broke. Looking at the wear pattern and the installed arrangement; it is clear that since the shift rod is not exactly parallel to the centerline of the bike, this linkage is prone to frequent failure.

Pulled over, tie-wrapped and rode safely and easily to stealership.  Once there I found out that of course stock is no longer available; nor would I really want one since learning how it's designed.
And yep, prices are outrageous to replace with a custom linkage rod (Road King engraved on rod).

What's the normal 'bike-life' of the shifter Linkage?  Anywhere from 15K to 20K miles? Or does it depend on how hard you ride the bike? Meaning how hard you shift?

I've never heard of a bunch of failures of the shift linkage. Certainly not enough to figure out a "bike -life" for it. I offer a pretty stout round chrome "plain Jane" linkage from Landmark PN 601-625 $ 59.99 that is not outrageously priced that has Sperical balls (Hiem) on each end.

    ClassicRK:

The ball joint / cuff linkage at the front end of the shift linkage broke.

if it was the ball/socket section (hiem joint) that broke, one of the common reasons for premature failure is lack of lubricant.  Often these are steel balls rubbing inside an alunimum socket - needs some lube (i.e. wd40) every so often - maybe every oil change.

When I was working on the race car (Saturday niight stuff), we change all of them every year (and sometimes during the year).

    hope this helps

Yes; it was the heim joint and I never thought it would require frequent lubing.

Never had to on my 87' FXR and that Shfter Linkage is still going strong.  Maybe it's because the old stuff was made better.

Update - New linkage does not have a heim joint.  A bolt is inserted through levers and 'flexible' ends of linkage.  Tightened to a designated spec while using blue loctite.

I'll revisit topic if it unexpectedly breaks in the near future.

Xea and Ironhead, thanks for the feedback.
