    Primary Chain Case Lube

This may be a dumb question, but I have to ask it.

The service manual states 26oz of lube for the primary chain case, / level is acceptable when lub is visible between clutch and inner wall of case. here is the question, quote from the H-D manual " with cycle with cycle standing up right.

Does this mean up right on blocks  level,or with the cycle up right on it's kick's stand????

I've all ways done it with the bike on it's kick stand up right.  which is about 26 oz..  I've heard of some shops putting in a full Quart.

    Re: Primary Chain Case Lube

If you go to any shop, when they change the fluids they have your bike strapped to a table lift - bike straight up

as for dumping the whole thing in, it means they don't have to have something to measure with, and it is your oil (you bought the whole jug) - what are they gonna do - give you the remainder in a plastic bag for you to try to hold on to when you drive home?

When workin' on your ride the first tool out of the box should be the manual

I've alsways had the bike in the upright position. With the bike level on a lift (no kickstand). Usually takes close to a qt.

I took the information in my 2006 Heritage manual to mean that the bike should be straight up and not on the kickstand.  Mine however would take a full quart in order to get the oil to the point of just touching the bottom edge of the diaphram spring.  The first time I changed primary oil myself, I measured out the 26 ounces and put it in.  Then I added the rest to get it up to the spring.  Everytime thereafter, I put in the full quart and it was always right.  I also had a reference in my manual to the engine oil capacity being 3 and 1/2 quarts.  That was wrong.  I figured that out too the first time I changed oil and the oil was being bubbled and churned by the returning oil line and it almost would push out the filler neck.  I guess it could have been blown out into the breather too if I had left it too full.

thanks o6 , I set the bike on a 10X6 and changed the primary oil and the trnny oil.  yea the book says 26 oz and then chack the level. I put 30 oz and with a mirror it looked close enough . I'm all set and the bike also, look out yellowstone, Glacier national park ,MT, and Crator lake OR. Here I come. 11 days on the "road again".
