Do you put both feet or one foot down at stop signs??

Do you use both feet down at stop signs or do you only put one foot down,or do you not put any feet down at stop signs? I use one the left and use the right to hold the rear the brake. sometimes I hold the bike to a full stop without putting any foot down. I hear in some states both feet are required and some states only require one foot down. here in CA the law states you must come to a complete stop. says nothing about any feet down. I would say the left foot down would be safer than no feet down. so states give you a choice some do not. Is their a county wide list to look at, so one could find out which state requires both feet down or one foot down or no feet down?

Havn't really thought about it..but if I come to a stop sign I usually go no feet and don't come to a complete stop then go and if I have to stop for any amount of time it's left foot first then the right, and using the front brake if needed.

At a stop sign I attempt the no feet down option if the intersection is clear and it's gonna be quick. If I have to stop and wait I always put two down and use the front brake to hold the bike. My reasoning is based on experience; oil or something slick in the intersection that may be where you just put that one foot down is an issue. I used one foot in the past until I hit one of those slick spots and fortunately after the initial slip, got some traction and kept upright. As for any specific laws I have no idea.

In my experience and receiving citations for this. The requirement is at least one foot down. Doesn’t specify left or right. And this is taking into consideration the older bikes that had no front brake, and or right foot shift, hand shift or whatever.

I would recommend the two feet method.  The reason has been given already.  There is nothing more disconcerting than that "no traction" feeling you get when you hit oil/grease/ice/gravel and start to keel over.  I do my best to time lights by slowing/coasting to the line so I arrive at the green.  I won't be winning any slow races, but I can do pretty well at not dabbing for longer than most.  Every once in a while we make a game of it.  First one to hit the tarmac buys lunch, or dinner.  A softtail isn't quite as easy to muscle as a trials bike and I have decided there is no shame in being safe.  If you live in a state that actually mandates how to put your feet down when you stop, I would recommend immediately moving somewhere where the politicians have IQ's larger than their shoe size.

I would have to say you guys are right, two feet down would be better. As for the law, here in CA  no feet down is ok, ya just have to come to a complete stop,But in sturgis two feet down at a stop sign is the law. I had a buddy in sturgis this year that got a ticket for not putting both feet down. It would be nice to have each states feet down laws, so when ya go to each state the law would be known.

I live in the sierra foothills and when I come to a stop sign I use one foot down (sometimes no feet down) and the right foot to hold the brake on up hill start ups. So my right hand can throttle up. I do use both feet down in town where the oil and sand, gravel is. On my roadtrip this year I used both feet down where I could,it helped keep the bike steady with the leavy load. After unloading the heritage from the 3097mile roadtrip the bike felt like a sporty.

I always go left foot down, then right foot down.  just a long time habit for me. I do sometimes, but rarely, keep my right foot on the floorboard such as in stop and go at a light that turns green just as I have come to a stop.  When my sweet wife is riding with me, I always put both feet down at a stop 'cause she is such a wiggler on the seat that I have a hard time sometimes just going straight on a straightaway with her, and when it's time to stop, LOOK OUT!!!!!!!! she's all over the place!!!!! I love that woman!!!!!!!!

Sub,,,,,,I checked out your fotos from the road trip,,,,,,man that was a good one! you really had that Heritage packed out and I can see a good reason to put passenger floorboards on even if you dont carry a pasenger very often!

06,  that road trip was a dream come true. Going threw nevada hwy 80 east to salt lake city at 105 degrees, those Ice chest on each passenger floorboards came in handy. Ice cold water, sandwiches, and of course A beer.  My wife does not ride on the bike, she is scared to ride on a bike. She drives her truck. My 21 yr old Daughter rides, short strips like lake Tahoe and home, 120 miles. I Can't wait for next summers trip to ????

I know what you mean about the wife being scared.  my wife will ride ocasionally around town a bit but she too is terrified.  I can tell by the way she stays so tensed up when riding.  my two daughters ride comfortably and you never can tell they are riding with you.

I hope to be able to make a trip to Daytona this comming season.  I have a couple of buddies at work who are a lot of fun and trusted riding partners.  we all have about the same riding habits and that makes for a fun trip.  we have been talking about daytona and possibly the fall event.  daytona is about a nine or ten hour ride from where I live.  We make a lot of one day trips all thru the spring and summer.  sometimes to the mountains, sometimes to the coast.  these are usually 400 to 500 mile round trip runs but we have a lot of fun and keep our little ladies happy too when we get back home at night.  The best and most scenic riding for us here in NC is the Blueridge Mountains and along the Parkway.  The rally at Cherokee is a lot of fun and usually pretty wild too even though it's hosted at a relatively small facility.  like you, I can hardly wait for next spring and a road trip to where ever.........

Never really thought about it, sometimes as I roll up to a stop light, I don't put any down, but at stop signs, I guess I usually put both feet down, use the front brake if on an incline...both feet down is prolly safer way to completely stop...w/ passenger, I would use the both feet method for sure...
