  • Piston Compression Ring SIDE Clearance

I have always checked the ring end gap and called it good. I am putting my '75 1200 back together (after removing the wavy washers on the rocker arms) and I noticed some carbon on on a compression ring that seemed to be slightly binding it. No chunks just a dark area. In the process of cleaning it...

  • 1977 Shovelhead puking oil from the breather.

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum; I had no problems with my Shovel until recently. Here is the thing: Cold start - no puking. Runs fine -no puking 20 min. later (oil reaches 200F) bike starts to leave an oil trail behind. I turn it off, after 1min. turn it back on. It shoots out about 4 oz. of oil...

  • Pull in clutch, put in gear, lurches forward

That is where I am stuck. Thankfully have another bike to ride. My 82 HD FLT is the problem child. I recently (in the last two months) sealed the primary (while having the main seal/bearing replaced), replaced the clutch metals, replaced the throwout bearing/washers/clip, installed a clutch tamer and...

  • New & forked from near Atl, GA

Introduce myself, as I am new to forum. I have a blended bike I got literally in a basket. '75 FXE frame w/'82 shovelhead. Getting things right has been a challenge, Biggest pain has been identifying what has been used on the bike, make and model. What I am trying to figure out now, is the front...

  • timing or what??

Hi, new member here. Live in New Mexico and have two older harleys, a 92 Softail custom & 82 FLH. I'm a member on another forum but maybe someone in this group can answer my question. On my 82 Shovelhead, my front cylinder is running rich and the back one seems fine. Compression is the same in...

  • S&S in ShovelHead Skins

I have a 1974 Harley-Davidson FXE SUPERGLIDE that has been built with many custom extras. Heads are S&S and dual-plugged using DYNA Single Fire Ignition, an S&S Super B Carburetor, and a late model 5 speed transmission (still chain driven secondary) and SPYKE High-torque starter to crank-over...

  • Shovelhead Head Question

Can the heads from a 74 CI be used on a 80 CI engine? I ask this because I like the look of the way the exhaust exits on the front cylinder and runs the pipe down and in front of the frame. I am thinking of building a second bike and want this look with a bigger engine if possible. I also know where...

  • shovelhead duel plug timing

Good Evening, Bought a basket shovel that I've been putting back togather and it's got duel plug heads. Looking to static time before I fire up and was told that with duel plugs you should retard the time 5-7 degrees. So normally I'd set the timeing off the front advance timing mark with...
