  • Re: bike lurches when holding clutch in and putting in 1st gear while cold

I used to have the same problem. I'm anxious to see if there is a better remedy than the one I used. High performance clutches always, in my experience, stick when cold. Even when adjusted correctly they will stick. If they don't stick cold they'll be too loose hot when you want what you paid for. Two ways to get by: Rock the clutch loose before you start the bike. With the bike in gear, hold the clutch lever in and rock it loose. This is easier if you are young and strong. Another is to start the

  • spark plugs

The local HD dealer sold me 4R5 HD plugs for my 77XLCR. I just replaced them with Champion RH8C plugs. When comparing the two I noticed that they are very different. The HD plug has an electrode tower that extends much further from the plug base compared to the Champ which has an electrode that only slightly protrudes beyond the base. Which, if either, is correct? Which is hotter? The owners manual recommends HD#4 or HD#5 for hard service. (This bikes hard service days are few and far between). These

  • Re: coil explodes

Thanks for the informed replies. I did wonder if I had left the key in the on position. That was the reason behind this fishing expedition. Also, I wanted to eliminate other possible causes. I replaced the coil, points and condenser along with new plugs and ignition wires. The coil was 15 yrs. old. The wires were the originals. The bike runs fine.Look at a new post about the spark plugs.

  • coil explodes

While charging the battery on my 77XL with a 2amp charger overnite the coil became hot and exploded. It stunk up the garage and left black goop all over the place. My question is: under what circumstances was this possible? The bike has the original point ignition. The coil was an economy priced replacement. There is no other damage.

  • '77 HD mags

I'm shopping for tires for a '77CR. Dunlop says none of their tires are compatable with pre-1980 "CM contour rims". The owners manual calls them "taper base rims". I've had non compatable Dunlop Elite S/T tires on it for many, many years. WTF, who new? Is there anything to this? Inquiring minds would like to know.

  • Re: XLCR brakes

The center hole is actually slightly less than 2". It should work fine.

  • Re: XLCR brakes

I e-mailed the photos to your mailbox. The measurements are correct. The bolt pattern is the same as the fronts. The thickness is .230".

  • Re: XLCR brakes

Thank you for the timely replys. I will remove the rotor from the bike and take precise measurements. I'll also make photographs of the configuration and forward them. It will probably be a day or two. Again, thanks.

  • Re: XLCR brakes

On the same topic, I think the # 2400185 rotor will fit the back. It measures up the same I think. 10" od X 2" id, and has counter bored mounting holes w/flat bottoms, not tapered like the fronts, that take 3/8 bolts.

  • XLCR brakes

I am ordering new vented stainless steel rotors for this bike. Which brake pads would be a good match? I don't ride the bike very far and always easy.
