Some twin cams have too much run out in the pinion shaft to run gear drive, mine was about .001 which was OK. Any more than that makes it hard to fit gears that don't whine. Don't forget to check for slop in the crank gear! Mine was loose as a goose...Mike

I put a CV on my 51 panhead a couple years ago cause I was sick of the parts washer S&S. She is a 84" pan and seems to like a 45 in the pilot and 175 in the main. for fine tuning don't forget about the idle mixture screw, a couple turns in or out makes a difference starting after the bike is hot...Mike

If you change the cam you may as well shave the head to bump up the compression or else you may even lose power. A free flowing air cleaner like the Sceamin' Eagle as well as a less restrictive exhaust system will help the motor breath for extra power. Don't forget to re-jet the carb.....Mike

Check the pink wire on the tack, maybe it vibrated off....Mike

Think back to the last thing you did, new clutch cable.....I'll bet the adjustment is wrong, read thru the service manual and give it another shot, I'm sure your problem can be adjusted out. Mike. PS how many miles? Stock motor?

Jeff, you will need to re-adjust the rods, do each one when the lifter is at its lowest point, otherwise the rod will be too short. With the lifter all the way down, tighten up the adjuster to where there is no shake or rattle, then add the 4 turns and lock them down. Wait a few minutes before turning the engine to adjust the next one, so the lifter can "bleed down", otherwise the valve may collide with the piston. Good luck! Mike

Usually the Harley parts will come with detailed instructions, Do you remember how the stock strap was bolted on? As I recall My wifes' bike has one bolt right under the middle of the seat. (deuce) I have to pull the seat out of the strap which stays attatched...Mike

Look for a pink wire at the coil that may be broken, otherwise, does the lite work? Mike

Before you put it back together, check the pinion gear, there is a D shaped hole that slips over the pinion shaft (I believe it is now called the crank gear). on mine this gear had a lot of slop and had to be replaced with an andrews gear. I believe the stock part is MIM (crap)...Mike

I've installed the Racetec goldvalves in all my harleys, except the pans, and have found them benificial in both handleing and eliminating "clunking". The one downfall is they can't be adjusted without pulling the tube caps off and fishing them out with a grabber tool. If you do decide to install a set, set them up for the minimum resistance, They come with two sets of springs also one for lite bikes and one for heavy. I found the lite ones worked better in my roadking...Mike
